This book has been to have a textbook which will not only be suitable to B-Pharma and M-Pharma students of Indian Universities but also serves the purpose of practising medicinal chemists in the University and industry. Therefore, an effort has been made to provide the students with knowledge of basic physiological principles and chemical concepts required in understanding and interpretation medicinal chemistry. It is with these objectives in mind that the subject matter has been designed to make it an effective textbook for students and also serve as a resource book.
The content of the book has been divided into four sections. Section A comprises topics of theoretical and general importance which have been arranged in the form of five chapters as Introduction; chemical structure and Biological activity, receptor theories, transport, and metabolism of drugs. These topics have been dealt with in a systematic manner incorporating the latest ideas so as to provide a clear correlation on the subject matter. Section B has been titled in the form of Pharmacodynamic agents and covers a very wide range of classes of drugs. These include agents which affect the central nervous system; the cardiovascular system, diuretics, cholinergic and adrenergic drugs, antiallergic compounds, antispasmodic and antiulcer drugs, and lastly drugs that elicit G I symptoms. Section C has been designated as Chemotherapeutic agents and includes topics like sulfur drugs, antibiotics, antimalarial compounds, antihclmintics, antitubercular drugs, anticancer and antiviral compounds. The material contained in this section has been organized with current ideas on the understanding of the subject and compounds recently developed have also been added.
